FAVORITE! This book is intriguing in an absolutely new way. This is a mixture of novel with a hint of story with words and pictures. It was unlike anything I have ever read - I really like that! Franny is a young girl who is struggling with being in a military family at the height of the Cuban missile crisis. She is practicing for nuclear attacks at school, her uncle is suffering from PTSD from WW 2, her sister is going to college (and is beautiful!), her brother is a saint and her best friend is not being so friendly as of late. This book shows the journey of Franny realizing that a love and caring is not just about looks and appearance, it's about the inward heart and character. Metafiction - not only showing the journey of Franny growing up and making choices for herself but her family as well, Uncle Otts acceptance of his involvement in the War and his brother's death. War and life... thoughts that are real in all of our lives.
